Mothers Day Sermons are Expressions of Love and Gratitude

Mothers Day sermons are expressions of love, gratitude and hope. Churches all over the country celebrate the virtues of being a mother. This year, on the 2nd Sunday of May people everywhere will pay tribute to their mothers and grandmothers with sermons that honor all that motherhood stands for, both today and in days gone by. To accompany the moving sermon about mothers many churches hand out carnations to every woman (and sometimes man) present, with red ones symbolizing mothers who are living and white ones signifying mothers who have passed on. During prayer time mothers who have died are remembered as well as those mothers present in the congregation who have lost a child. All mothers are prayed for at this time.

A Mothers Day sermon is about giving thanks to God for our mothers and the roles they play in our lives. Each of our mothers is a very special person and that is whom we celebrate on Mothers Day every year. Some sermons include both the positive and negative aspects of motherhood, because let's face it, being a mom has both sides! Ministers discuss mothers in an honest, true light in the pastoral prayer and include not just biological mothers but also mothers of adopted children, stepmothers, grandmothers and women who have taken on the role of a mother in a child's life, such as foster mothers.

What is the best way to honor one's mother during a sermon on Mothers Day? There is no one correct answer. It is always meaningful to get the children involved in the sermon on the specialness of mothers. Children in the congregation enjoy singing and a song that emphasizes the worthiness of love, hope and peace is always an excellent choice. Relating the story of how Mothers Day first began is sure to get the little ones' attention. Some scripture suggestions for a sermon include Proverbs 30:11 which focuses on "The Likeness of a Mother," Ezekiel 19:10, "The Deeds of a Good Mother," 1 Samuel 1:1-28 "The Ideal Mother," and 2 Timothy 1:1-5, "She's My Mother."
