The Jewish Mothers Day and Three Special Women
Mothers Day is not just Mothers Day but also the
Jewish Mothers Day
as well. This day set aside to honor and celebrate all mothers, whether they be Christian or
Jewish, became an official holiday in the United States in the year 1914. Hannah Greenebaum
Solomon was one mother who would have been quick to extol the merits of motherhood. Solomon, who
headed the first
National Council of Jewish Women
believed that a woman's foremost responsibility was to her family. She took her role as a mother
very seriously and devoted herself completely (especially in her early days) to raising her three
beloved children, Herbert, Helen and Frank.
Jewish Mothers Days year after year have been widely celebrated from the beginning. The
Jewish Welfare Society
does its part to revere all moms and thank them for all they do day in and day out to embrace and
sustain their families. In days gone by a Mothers Day pamphlet was published that described both
the history and roles played by many Jewish mothers. Many temples offered mothers white carnations
at their special celebration of motherhood held on the traditional Mothers Day. Also there was the
singing of "Eshet Chayil" also known as the "Woman of Valor" prayer that was taken from Proverbs.
The Jewish Women's Archive pays tribute to all Jewish mothers and their wondrous gifts through
their Women of Valor exhibit. Besides Hannah Greenebaum Solomon, also are honored two very special
names, those of Gertrude Weil and Anna Sokolow. Gertrude Weil's strong Jewish teachings inspired
her desire for equality, justice and social reform. Her days were filled in fighting for things
all mothers would be proud of, such as women's suffrage and child labor legislation. Dancer and
choreographer Anna Sokolow was known as a woman of integrity and strong belief in the "dignity of
the human spirit and its resilience in the face of trouble." Jewish mothers everywhere, even today
can smile proudly at the memory of these women who championed for the underprivileged and left
their unforgettable mark in our society.
